Castle Tavern - Várcsárda

The Várcsárda has been welcoming its guests for decades in beautiful surroundings, at the foot of Sümeg Castle.

The building is history itself, its walls are the keeper of many legends. Mór Kisfaludy, the nephew of the poet Sándor Kisfaludy, was born and lived in this house. He was a lieutenant colonel of the Hungarian Defence Forces in 1848, and is one of the great Hungarian heroes.

The Restaurant was already a thriving business in the 1900s, the gastronomic centre of the busy town and the venue for bohemian revelries. Many successful and passionate restaurateurs had learned their trade here. By the end of the 1900s, its lustre faded somewhat, its standards declined and it was feared that it would never shine in its former glory.

Then it became the property of the Papp Family, and gradually, just like Sümeg Castle, it started to come back to life.

The building has undergone several renovations and extensions, but it retains its old Hungarian atmosphere. Today, as part of the 1st Historical Adventure Park, it is one of the jewels of the Castle Garden, along with the Sümeg Castle and the Hotel Kapitány****superior Wellness.

The Restaurant is open all year round. Our guests can taste local and Hungarian dishes, homemade specialities, oven-baked dishes and fine Hungarian wines in the shade of walnut trees in summer and in the warmth of the tiled stove in winter. The majority of the ingredients for the dishes come from the Castellan’s model farm. The delicacies, hams, sausages and bacon made from pigs reared on the farm's own feed give our dishes an unforgettable taste.

The Great Hall of the Knights, which can accommodate up to 400 people, is located under the Castle Restaurant and is ideal for hosting weddings and similar large-scale events, which can even be combined with medieval jousting and other activities.

In the stables and farmyard around the Restaurant, you can see our indigenous domestic animals and their young. In addition, the medieval playground next to the Restaurant has undoubtedly become the children's favourite in recent years.
